Reading fluency deals with the ability to read text accurately, quickly, effortlessly, and with expression. It is a skill that is linked to the comprehension of text. Reading fluency is correlated with comprehension, so therefore, if a student cannot read fluently, they do not comprehend what they are reading as well as a fluent reader. When it comes to reading fluency, there are three main components that tie into being a fluent reader. These three components are reading speed, prosody, and accuracy.
- Speed refers back to the rate at which students read. It is measured by
Words Correct per Minute (WCPM).
- Accuracy refers to how many words the student reads correctly.
Accuracy has three different levels:
- Independent = 95-100% accuracy
- Instructional = 90-94% accuracy
- Frustrational = less than 90% accuracy
- Prosody refers to expression when reading. A student's pitch variations,
intonation, reading rate, pausing, and emphasis are all considered
components of prosody.
